Please bring your previous reports or access to your previous examination images.

Appointments are required for ultrasound, CT Scans ,CONE BEAM and BMD General X-Rays do not require an appointment.

The following preparations were written with adults in mind. For children or patients who feel they may not be able to cope with the particular preparations required, please contact our staff. Previous history of any allergic reaction with Intravenous Contrast Medium should be reported to our staff importantly radiographers when making your appointment. Medication to reduce the risk of a Contrast Medium reaction may be required & can be arranged by our staff.

General Ultrasound Procedures

PROCEDURE TIME ALLOCATION PREPARATION
ABDOMEN 20
  • Fast from food for 8 hrs prior to appointment.
  • No smoking, chewing gum, or caffeine.
  • No alcohol for 24 hours.
  • 8 – 16 yr: 6 hours fast.
  • 0 – 8 yr: 4 hours fast (if possible).
ABDOMEN + ELASTOGRAPHY 40
 Fast for 6 hours. Please do not smoke during this period. Take normal medications with a sip of water – no milk or soft drinks.
RENAL ARTERIES 40
 Fast from food for 8 hrs prior to appointment.
DOPPLER STUDIES (Aorta & Iliac Arteries / Leg Arteries) 40 (single)
60 (bilateral)
 No preparation required.
PELVIS 30
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink specified amount, finish 1 hr before, hold until after appointment.
  • 12 – 18+ years: 800 mL
  • 3 – 11 years: 400 mL
  • < 4 yrs: Ensure child is well hydrated.
RENAL, KUB, PROSTATE (These are all the same scan) 20
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 800 mL.
  • Finish 1 hr before.
  • Hold until after appointment.
DOPPLER STUDIES (Carotid) 30
 No preparation required.
DVT 30

Follicle Tracking / Scanning

“Antral Scan” 30 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 800 mL.
  • Finish 1 hr before.
  • Hold until after appointment.
All other Follicle Scans Variable
 No preparation required.

Obstetric / Gynaecology Ultrasounds

DATING SCAN 30 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 800 mL.
  • Finish drinking within 30 mins.
  • Hold bladder until after appointment.
WELLBEING SCAN 30 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 400 mL.
  • Finish drinking within 30 mins.
  • Hold bladder until after appointment.
NUCHAL TRANSLUCENCY 45 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 400 mL.
  • Finish drinking within 30 mins.
  • Hold bladder until after appointment.
MORPHOLOGY 60 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 400 mL.
  • Finish drinking within 30 mins.

OVER 22 WEEKS 40 mins
  • Empty bladder 1.5 hrs before.
  • Drink 400 mL.
  • Finish drinking within 30 mins.
  • Hold bladder until after appointment.

CT Scan Preparations

CT Abdomen, CT Pelvis, CT Chest, CT Head, CT Soft Tissue Neck or CT Angiography:

Fast for 4 hours. It is important to remain hydrated. Please advise our staff if you are diabetic, asthmatic or have any allergies. Please drink two glasses of water in the hour before your appointment.
